House for an Arborist
Coconut Grove, Miami, Florida
With this Coconut Grove typology exploration, Studio Shell set out to create an alternative to the white cube destroying Coconut Grove's character. This house draws inspiration from the shingle style bungalow homes found in Coconut Grove. It pairs a bungalow facade with a courtyard and a modern wing of mass timber and wood craftsmanship. This house seeks to capture the spirit of old Florida and the exuberance of South American modernism at once.
From the street this house has a low brow and traditional shingle style bungalow facade. The roofline is sliced towards the rear creating this spectacular double height glass wall that opens up to the heart of the home, the courtyard. The goal was to provide the young nature minded family with as much livable indoor and outdoor space as possible while preserving tree canopy, using air conditioning strategically, and capturing the true spirit of Coconut Grove.
The ground floor of the home opens completely to the rear yard allowing views from the front door all the way through to the pool area. The open air, convertible space functions as a flex space for the family ie: play room, mediation, fitness, and laundry. This space also connects to a ground level garage. The upper floor is reserved for the private bedrooms.
